With the four regional carnivals having been a success, the carnival leaders met over the weekend to discuss the season as a whole.
This year was an exciting one for emccan – for the first time we were successful in a Strategic Touring bid. This meant that through funding from Arts Council England we were able to run a professional UK carnival tour; Flight of Fantasy. Working together, the four carnivals were represented by some of the best talent in the region at events including Brouhaha International in Liverpool, and Ryde Festival in the Isle of Wight.
As well as being a part of this exciting and innovative tour, the carnivals once again supported one another by bringing costumes and troupes to perform in each other’s events. They also took costumes and performers to be a part of Leeds and Notting Hill Carnivals last month, spreading the East Midlands talent even further.
In addition to the carnival season, Leicester Caribbean Carnival hosted the regions sixth annual Queen Show at Peepul Centre in Leicester. Each city crowned their own queen and the overall regional queen was announced as Marie from Nottingham.
Taking the organisation to the next level, over the coming years we welcome the news that Arts Council England have invested £125,000 to support emccan in its fundraising efforts and to build its capacity and infrastructure to become more resilient. This has been made possible through the Catalyst: Evolve programme.
Before we head into an autumn season full of planning and more exciting projects (keeps your eyes peeled for more info), we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped us to have such a wonderful summer. From the carnival volunteers, to the troupes and performers, and those who lined the streets to support us at events – thank you all!
Stay tuned for the Flight of Fantasy 2016 official tour video… coming very soon!
